Schrödinger About Us – Materials Science
A video for Schrödinger about the Materials Science division.
Design | Animation | Videography | Story | Editing
Following the success of the initial ‘Schrödinger About Us’ video, I was tasked with creating more focused videos about each part of the company, going slightly more in-depth on different components of the business model.
Again, I took on every role in the production: storyboarding, developing a style, shooting, modeling, texturing, animating, comping, and editing the video.
This video had to drill down a bit more into the scientific concepts without losing the overall message of the company’s mission.
Leveraging Scientific Research Software
One of new challenges in this video was a technical one: Getting the scientific models from Schrödinger’s proprietary software packages (LiveDesign, Maestro, and PyMOL) into production oriented DCC’s such as Cinema 4D and Houdini.
from this (Maestro)
to this (C4D/Redshift)
We needed to present these concepts in as dynamic and engaging a method as possible and, unfortunately, the pieces of software that Schrödinger produces are geared towards scientific exploration – not visuals, so the models extremely dense and weren’t true conventional ‘geometry’.
I worked with members of each development team to figure out a pipeline to extract more general-use 3D models of structures with point data.
Also, the structures coming out of the software were incredibly large, so we had to leverage some of the underlying architecture of PyMOL in order to even import it.
Finally into Houdini where I leveraged the power of USD to handle the large amount of data and constant revisions.
And as with the previous Schrödinger ‘About Us’ video, I shot footage of actual employees in the office. We wanted to show off the beautiful space, as well as the people who make the company go.
The video was a success across the organization, with every department now wanting their own treatment.
